Atlixcayotontli is a cultural music and dance festival in Atlixco held on the first Sunday of September at San Miguel Hill. This site is home to the “Neototiloyan”—an ancient ceremonial hill whose name translates from Nahuatl as “Hill of the Dance.”

The name Atlixcayotontli signifies the “little festival” or “the small celebration of Atlixco identity.” It is a Nahuatl word formed by combining “Atlixcayotl” (the identity or tradition of Atlixco) with the diminutive suffix “-tontli” (small). Atlixcayotontli takes place prior to the major festival dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel—the “Huey Atlixcayotl”—which is held on the last Sunday of September.

Atlixcayotontli showcases music, song, and dance groups from Atlixco’s four regions: the central valleys, the “Tierra Caliente” (hot lands), the volcanic zone, and the Tentzo mountain range. Although it serves as a prelude to the “Atlixcayotl”, it is no less significant; each year, new participants join the event, such as “Voladores” (flying dancers) from the Totonacapan region and guest groups from other parts of Puebla or other states.

Participants perform traditional dances, such as “Los Vaqueros” (The Cowboys) from the “Tierra Caliente”; “Los Doce Pares de Francia” (The Twelve Peers of France) from Tochimilco; and “Los Huizos” from the Ricardo Treviño neighborhood of Atlixco.

After their performances, featured groups—such as the “Voladores”, the “Chinas Atlixquenses”, and the “Charros de Atlixco”—distribute regional fruits, traditional sweets, and mezcal served in hollow cane stalks.

Both Atlixcayotontli and “Atlixcayotl” are festivals celebrated by “mestizo” and indigenous communities, aimed at reclaiming the traditions, customs, and values ​​that define their identity.

The first Atlixcayotontli took place on September 4, 1966, at San Miguel Hill, drawing 5,000 participants. That is why it is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, 2026.
